Derek Bailey:Born 29 January 1930, Sheffield, England. From 1941 to 1952 studied music with C.H.C. Biltcliffe and guitar with, among others, George Wing and John Duarte. From 1951 to 1965 Derek Bailey worked as a guitarist - soloist, accompanist or orchestral - in every kind of musical situation: clubs, concert halls, dance halls, radio, TV, and recording studios. During this period, he became increasingly interested in the possibilities of freely improvised music and, since 1965, has performed solo concerts in all major cities of Europe, Japan and North America. He has also played with most of the musicians associated with free improvisation. In 1970, Derek Bailey formed Incus Records with Evan Parker and Tony Oxley, it being the first independent, musician-owned record company in Britain. In 1976 he formed Company, a changing ensemble of improvising musicians from many backgrounds, featuring players from Europe, North and South America, Africa and Japan and which since then has performed concerts and extended events all over the world. Company Week was inaugurated in 1977 as an annual event in London to which all kinds of improvisors from around the world were invited for five days of music-making through improvisation. Company Weeks have subsequently been held at other locations, for example, New York and Hakushu, Japan. The final Company Week was held in 1994. Derek Bailey divides his time among solo performances, running Incus, practising, writing - currently a book on the guitar - and, something he considers essential, ad-hoc musical activities. Ernst Reijseger (1954) started to play the cello at 8 years old. Quite early in his life he became rapidly fascinated by the diverse musical formes and styles in the world available for Dutch listeners. He played/recorded a.o. with: Sean Bergin, Martin van Duynhoven, Derek Bailey, , Alan Purves and Franky Douglas. Was member of the Theo Loevendie Consort, the Guus Janssen Septet, the Arcado Stringtrio, with Michael Moore and Han Bennink in Trio Clusone, Misha Mengelberg's Instant Composers Pool , the Gerry Hemingway quintet and Yo Yo Ma. In 1985 he received the Boy Edgar prize. The award highly regarded by potential Dutch audience in the Netherlands and higly appreciated by its receiver. In 1995 he received the "Bird-Award" during the Nordsea Jazz Festival. Ernst Reijseger playes duo with Franco d Andrea piano, Louis Sclavis, cl ssax Stian Carstensen , acc, banjo, guitar, mandoline,kaval and trio with the Amsterdam String Trio, Stian Carstensen and drummer Jarle Vespestadt , Trio with Eric Vloeimans, trumpet and Anton Goudsmit, Guitar and duo with Senegalese singer Mola Sylla, trio with Mola Sylla and percussionist Serigne Gueye, also from Senegal and regulary does concerts with Alan Purves in duo or in combination with Trad. Singers from Sardenia, the Tenores e Concordu de Orosei. Projects Ernst Reijseger participates in are f.i. : A Tango/PostTango project with WDRbigband Köln With Music from Gerardo Gandini/comp/dir and Bandoneonist Nestor Marconi or a project called Barana & Co with Dutch ,virtuoso Turkish musicians and a drummer/percussionist from Iran. Ernst Reijseger writes music for Film and Documentarys. His written music is performed by wellrespected cellist Larissa Groeneveld and pianist Frank Van de Laar with reijseger as third 'free agent'. At the moment he also plays a different duoprogram of his music in combination with classical cellist Jeroen den Herder. He often plays soloconcerts. Apart from "Concerts for Adults" he likes to spend time playing for children, in schools and theatres, and does occasional "cello-workshops. This double CD-set is the companion to the final book reporting on the activities of Het Apollohuis. The recordings on these CDs give an idea of the music and the sound art presented in concerts at Het Apollohuis in the priod from 1980 through 1997. Out of a total of 500 performances I chose 38, from which exceprts of varying lenght have been included in this anthiology. These have been arranged in chronological order. The diversity of the selected pieces is characteristic of the programme of Het Apollohuis. Only limited number of composers and musicians who performed can be heard in brief fragments o these discs. Consequently a considerable number has been excluded. There simply was no way to include them all (this selection does not imply we value one above the other).
