Joe McKechnie aka The Mindwinder Based in Liverpool Joe McKechnie has been making music for many years, most recently as The Mindwinder and DJ Tempest. With releases on Buffalo (Joe's own label), Cheltenhams Ochre Records and Detroit techno label Acacia. At the end of 1997 Ochre released the compilation "Coming Round at Calums". The CD was compiled by Joe for Ochre Records. It features The Mindwinder track "Slo Mo Shoot Out". The Mindwinder has DJed at many Liverpool club night's. He is a regular at Liverpool's most underground night "The Fukdup Raves Social Club". A monthly event that changes venue and line-up for each event. He is also a regular guest at many events around the Liverpool area. The Mindwinder writes about music every fortnight for Event, the Merseysides listings magazine. The Mindwinder's most frequent outing until March 1999 was his weekly show on Liverpool independent radio station Crash FM (Saturday Night 9pm to Midnight). Joe produced and performed on the show, selecting a play-list from as wide a cross section of Dance music as possible. Each week As well as airing new recordings and mixes of his own, Joe invited a guest Producer to provide an exclusive mix (either a DJ set or a Live set) for the show. Guests on the show included Orlando Voorn (The Netherlands), Colin Newman (Swim, UK), Stephen Brown (Djax, NL) and Andrew Weatherall (UK). During 1999 as well as his regular Liverpool area gigs the Mindwinder has DJed in Glasgow with Sonic Boom's electronic collective E.A.R. as part of an Ochre Records Night, Toured Europe with a collective of Liverpool artists including ISM and DJed in Germany at Pop-Com. Closing 1999 Joe performed at the Ochre records 'Five' Festival in November 1999. A track (Soviet Space) will be available on the commemorative CD of the event, to be released in 2000. TRACE is a limited edition collection of two-minute pieces by international sound artists, experimental composers, noise makers and other audio creators. Each artist has produced an original recording of two-minute duration for the CD on the theme of TRACE. TRACE greated an opportunity for a selection of international sound artists to work thematically, as well as providing listeners with further insight into the artists work. By bringing together this calibre and range of contributions, TRACE aims to stimulate further interest in the practice, debate and dialogue surrounding sound art. The artista on TRACE range from well known world figures, to individuals and groups making their first wirks in this field. TRACE was published thanks to a research award from the Centre for Art International Research (CAIR).
