He has released records in the US, the UK, and Japan. He has been featured in periodicals such as Spin, Blender, German Rolling Stone, Muzik Express, The Wire, XLR8R, Urb, Crash, Muzik, Trax, The Village Voice, Style and The Family Tunes, Go Mag, Gonzo Circus, Grooves, De:Bug, and Vice. His music is a combination of many, many styles of music, all edited into a sort of new rock music. His live shows have garnered him a huge international audience, and involve much bad dancing, some blood, and a few shattered laptops. His latest album "The Unrelenting Songs Of The 1979 Post Disco Crash" was released in the US and EU by Sonig records of Koln Germany in April of 2004. It received overwhelming positive support internationally in many periodicals, newspapers and even the occasional TV program. He is hard at work on his new album, which will again be released by Sonig in August 2005, and an Ep for the late spring. A concert and video DVD is also in the works for later in 2005. First at Mac dowell Colony, then at Yaddo Colony and last at the Headlands center. The reflective look over an entire oeuvre became a mechanism that accelerated. At first it consisted of the Cageian gloss of playing entire works with other works, either simoultaneously on top of each other or sequentially in parts or sections. Then with digital network musics and the home computer came the text-radio works, creating new sound designs, playing them with old often ambient analog tape works. Finally the process became quite complex using simulation and photo-real aural sound soundscape in creating sonic atmospheres and doubles of all kinds. This De Chirico-like aping of former material has became quite developed and culminates in the Wave Fugue. He studied composition and piano with Hans Hagen and Lukas Foss in Buffalo and at the Berkshire Music Center, Tanglewood. He studied in New York and Darmstadt with Bruno Maderna and was a freelance composer for twenty years before earning degrees from SUNY Buffalo and Vermont College. He became an interdisciplinary adjunct professor teaching in prisons and on many college campuses throughout New York, Ohio, and California. He toured California prisons as artist-in-residence and conducted four years of interviews in Chicago with Pierre Boulez. The resulting book, DIALOGUES WITH BOULEZ, was recently published by Scarecrow Press. He composed Prison Dirges I for the Kronos String Quartet. Di Pietro's music has been performed by many musicians in venues throughout the world. According to Sharp, he was performing concerts by age eight. Sharp claims that his parents wanted him to be both a concert pianist and a scientist. He gave up piano, first in favor of the clarinet and then the guitar. His interest in science led him to build his own effects boxes for the instrument. He became intrigued with all types of experimental music, from contemporary classical to free jazz and sophisticated rock. Sharp studied anthropology at Cornell, where he played in a band and took an electronics class with synthesizer inventor Robert Moog. At Bard College he studied with free jazz pioneer Roswell Rudd (future Lounge Lizards John and Evan Lurie were classmates). He went to graduate school in Buffalo, where his academic advisor was Morton Feldman. He moved permanently to New York City in 1979, where he played gigs at various underground performance spaces, including the notorious ~Mudd Club. In the '80s Sharp became a major figure on the downtown New York experimental music scene, collaborating with many of it's most prominent players, including John Zorn, Wayne Horvitz, Bobby Previte, and Butch Morris. Over the years, Sharp has led his own bands more often than not. His music draws upon the wide range of his influences, from Coltrane to Zappa to Xennakis and beyond. An improviser at heart, Sharp's compositions tend to be quite loose, allowing plenty of room for the musicians to roam. Among his recent projects is the blues/hardcore/free jazz hybrid Terraplane, with bassist Dave Hofstra, saxophonist Sam Furnace, and drummer Sim. This double CD-set is the companion to the final book reporting on the activities of Het Apollohuis. The recordings on these CDs give an idea of the music and the sound art presented in concerts at Het Apollohuis in the priod from 1980 through 1997. Out of a total of 500 performances I chose 38, from which exceprts of varying lenght have been included in this anthiology. These have been arranged in chronological order. The diversity of the selected pieces is characteristic of the programme of Het Apollohuis. Only limited number of composers and musicians who performed can be heard in brief fragments o these discs. Consequently a considerable number has been excluded. There simply was no way to include them all (this selection does not imply we value one above the other).
