La conferenza si inserisce nell'ambito della rassegna dedicata al tema "Arte e filosofia del '900", curata da Giuseppe Di Giacomo e Maria Giuseppina Di Monte.

Tra il 1974 e il 1977 Jean-François Lyotard lavora ad alcuni scritti sotto il titolo Les Transformateurs Duchamp. Duchamp era scomparso il 2 ottobre del 1968 ma la sua opera è riscoperta e valorizzata in Francia proprio dopo la sua morte. Il Centre Pompidou dedicherà la prima grande retrospettiva a Marcel Duchamp nel 1977. È in questa occasione che nel volume che accompagna la mostra Lyotard pubblica un testo dal titolo Inventaire du dernier nu. Tali scritti sono dunque al centro della conferenza che cercherà di riflettere sul rapporto tra queste due figure nodali del XX secolo. Se la filosofia e l’arte sono da sempre in una relazione profonda, il rapporto tra Lyotard e Duchamp indica addirittura una simbiosi e uno scambio, una tendenza del filosofo e dell’artista a oltrepassare, ognuno a suo modo, i confini del proprio ambito, per interrogarsi non tanto su cosa siano la filosofia e l’arte ma per fare esperienza del sensibile, della scrittura e dell’indicibilità del linguaggio, dell’inenarrabile e di ciò che resta, in ultima analisi, sempre estraneo alla visione, tuttavia, come dicevano sia Lyotard che Duchamp, “possibile”.
