For over two years, Zerynthia, Association for Contemporary Art, and RAM (radioartemobile) have been carrying out a high profile program in the Palazzo Lantieri (Gorizia) that includes temporary exhibitions of contemporary art, permanent installation of site specific works of art, workshops, conferences, and broadcasting. Numerous guests will be present among artists, curators, critics, publishers and economists from the whole Europe, and particularly from East Central Europe.
Gorizia and Palazzo Lantieri are symbolic sites of multicultural and trans-border background, therefore they are suitable to host international projects based on cultural dialogue, and on human and artistic interaction.
Gorizia is well-known to the public opinion in Europe for its singular geographic position as a border city that played a special role in history. It keeps on being a cultural and politic bridge in Europe and it is a tangible example of multiethnic and multilingual city. People of three different ethnicities has been present, within the centuries, in a confined territory: Latin, Mittel-European and Slovenian. These solid entities represent different worlds that, in a very narrow territory, have been combining with clashes and fusions. We find Gorizia as the final city of the Mittel-European world and the first city of the Mediterranean world.
Today we are living in a conflicting and of nonconformity situation. For this reason, we pursued to set up a creative workshop in Gorizia that aims to use art as an answer, as a tool of unification and overtaking directed to international communication.
Imagining Common Lands was established in this setting. It is a well-structured project of Contemporary Art that includes a range of exhibitions and conferences of high artistic and intellectual level.
The project Editing -organized by Zerynthia, and curated by Cecilia Casorati and Lorenzo Benedetti- started last year with a seminar that confronted the activities of artists, curators and publishers belonging to twelve countries of East Europe. In fact the project is a work in progress. This year, different workshops have been planned, as bilateral artistic residences. The artists that have already participated in, have come from Austria, Italy, Rumania, Serbia, Slovenia e Slovakia.
The selected artists invited to stay in Gorizia, have to opportunity to exchange their views on borderline problems and to prepare plans.
Editing takes place out of the conventional system of art, with a non-predetermined course of action, developed through conversational lines as real dynamic and lively resources. In this way, an interchange net has been created, gathering artists from different cultures but with common principles.
Specifically, from September 28 through October 1, 2006 the 4th workshop of 2006 (Editing#4) will take place with artists from Bulgaria and Croatia in the Foyer of Palazzo Lantieri.
The main theme of the interdisciplinary artistic events taking place in Palazzo Lantieri is the collective symbolic representation of borderlands, freedom dreams, homesickness as well as the hope of sharing. International participants will be present.
In conjunction with Editing#4 on September 29, there will be the opening of a group exhibition of Alvin Curran, Rainer Ganahl, Tamuna Sirbiladze, Donatella Spaziani, Franz West, curated by RAM (radioartemobile).
The uniqueness of Palazzo Lantieri consists of being the magic container for the Old and the Contemporary. Even now, it follows the tradition of the aristocratic family retrieving the use to invite in these same rooms artists and important intellectuals. Actually, essential hints of the past have become historical layers, interacting today with the modernity of the contemporary works that artists decide to display.
As to testify the tradition of the artistic life of the Palazzo, on September 29, it will be held the conference “Inspiring Decadence – Lorenzo Da Ponte, il poeta di Mozart [the poet of Mozart]” by Professor Herbert Lachmayer, director of the Da Ponte Institut (Vienna).
